Intro

Every generation confronts a unique challenge that tests its collective mettle. For us, that challenge is global warming.

Our online community helped draft a new Declaration of New Patriotism showing our commitment to stopping global warming. We have a goal of collecting 75,000 signatures and will deliver the declaration to Congress by July 4th. Please join our campaign by signing the Declaration of New Patriotism today.

We're also collecting stories of people from around the country who embody the spirit of the New Patriotism. If you know a New Patriot, please share their story below.

Declaration of New Patriotism

Global warming is the crisis of our time.

As we prepare to celebrate our nation’s birthday, we renew our commitment to the qualities and values that have guided our nation for more than 200 years.

We the undersigned, pledge to:

  • Be mindful consumers, by minimizing our personal global warming “footprint;”

  • Be active citizens, by pressing our elected officials to take urgent action now, and by pressing all candidates for office to commit to passing strong legislation to cut America's global warming pollution;

Please help us add to this declaration. Add your comments by clicking "Comments" or "Post a Comment" below.

Thank you.

It should be mentioned that we should also encourage the government to impose and inforce strict laws on industry to reduce their ecological damage in country as well as abroad.

Another point would be that they should participate much more in the international process to fight climate change.

i think its important to remind people that whatever is an important issue to them...whether it be racisim, poverty, inequality, or anything at all...that none of that matters without an earth for it to exist on. with that being said, we should focus on fighting global warming so we ensure a future for ourselves and generations to come. then we can focus on whats next to come.

A patriot is someone who learns about the issues and works to elect people who care about science and the environment. A patriot does not blindly accept what the administration and the media tell them.

I'd suggest understanding the life cycle of every item that we use or consume in our daily lives. Whether that be food or material possessions, we need to simplify our lives. Understanding what it takes for food and products to reach us (the buyers) in terms of cultivation, production, transportation and then where all those things we use and consume end up in terms of waste. We need to want less possessions, own smaller houses, not have every desire satisfied. This is really the conversation about environmental sustainability, needing less not just about replacing a conventional product with a green one. The new patriotism is one that enjoys life in a local community while desiring and consuming less resources.

We all know what to do. DO IT NOW.

The most patriotic thing we can do is to free ourselves from our addiction to foreign oil. Developing alternative fuel and energy sources is the best thing we can do for our country and for the planet.

Get out of your car and walk, run, bike or take mass transit. It;s not that difficult.

Being a patiot is someone who loves all of life--plants, animals and the habitats they live in. A patriot supports the people and works for the betterment of our nation. A patriot recognizes civil rights and celebrates the diversity of all Americans. A patriot works for peace. Finally, a patriot takes actions to counter problems of the day, such as global warming, immigration, healthcare reform, etc.

Patriot: a person who loves, supports, and defends his or her country and its interests with devotion. This is how Patriotism is defined in the dictionary. In our own lives it should mean: someone who cares and supports not only his or her country but the rest of the world and those living in it. Alot of times people think Global Warming isn't a big problem. They think it won't actually effect anyone for at least 40 years or so, so why should they worry? What they aren't realizing is that yes, it won't neccesarily effect them, but what about their children? I know that I could never forgive myself if I destroyed what I would pass on to my descendants. This earth is here for us to appreciate it. If we don't take care of it what will be left for our children and grandchildren to enjoy. I personally believe that our current issue with Global Warming is a test of character, devotion, and inner strength. I believe it is an opportunity to do something good for the Earth but also to prove what we are capable of. Global Warming can be fixed, all we have to do is prove we're up to the challenge.

Patriotism should be reflected in a new emphasis on energy conservation and a turn away from rampant consumerism.

just being a human means being responsible. being responsible encompasses everything towards the positive growth of self and those around yourself. honesty (to others AND yourself). support. generosity. compromise. respect for everything. from the dirt to a wild animal to the person standing next to you. most importantly self-respect. you'll realize once you respect yourself every one of these things i mentioned falls in place because everything in this world is coexistent. whether this coexistence be minute or grand.

So people understand the gravity of global warming, perhaps a running list of cities and places that are experiencing changes.. such as Glacier National Park, Montana. Forbes had an article today that mentioned it was projected to melt away in 20-30 years.. it also mentioned global warming's impact on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia!

Taking action to prevent the destruction of our beloved home -- Planet Earth -- must start with each individual and the choices each of us make daily.
If each of us becomes committed to changing our wasteful habits, and act on that commitment, we will have an instantaneous revolution that will "trickle up" to our governments and big business.
It is a waste of critical time to sit around thinking that we can't have an effect as individuals and must wait on our governments to take action or blame the business world for causing the problem. They will follow us where we go since we are their bread and butter. The actions of one individual combined with the actions of many other individuals will be revolutionary in its effect.

Declare to always be conscientious of the environment especially by educating others about the consequences of global warming because it affects the intricate chain that is linked throughout life for all creatures and all beings, from the far east side of the globe, to right outside my front door.

• Ignore all the diversions of mainstream media so we can really see what is going on around us.

• Stop acting insane and learn from past and current crisis that we cannot do this any more.

• Use local farmers to fuel the economy and your car or truck as it was originally.

I think it is vital that we all work in harmony together. We are one planet living with our brothers and sisters and we need to work together. We all need to do our part- in every way we can...but when we are one- we are invincible! We need to re-create "United we stand." Through peace, love, respect and education, we can manifest anything we can imagine.

If you are going to make a grand declaration, you should go all the way and talk about the root of all environmental issues: Human population growth.
When you come to the realization that our population will eventually stop growing, whether we like it or not, you can start thinking about what stable population level is desirable. I submit that a target of 1 billion humans would be reasonable -- resulting in a sustainable world of beauty and diversity. We can get there without draconian measures. If we create incentives to cause every 10 people to have 9 children, we can get back to 1 billion in 19 generations, or about 500 years. In the meantime, the lifestyle and technical changes that everyone is espousing will have to save us from extinction.
We must come to the realization that continuous growth is not an option, and get working on a solution.

Great Initiative! Yes, Global Warming and Unsustainable use of environmental resources is the bane of our times.

Each of us needs to make a focussed, conscious and concerted effort to ensure that the future generations inherit this planet in as good a condition as we did, if not better.

Cheers!

Why are so many comments posted as "Anonymous said...?" I think if you believe in something stand up and be counted!

George Tristan said it right. Stand and be counted. "Anony-misses" make me sick. "Much thunder. No rain".

I actually agree with Wilson, we elect these politians to run the country on our behalf and as soon as elected they change into some secret power mad group who beleive all of a sudden they know whats best for all no matter whta the people think. USA, UK and Europe think they have democratic systems in place but they have subtle tyranical people running their countries.
