Intro

Every generation confronts a unique challenge that tests its collective mettle. For us, that challenge is global warming.

Our online community helped draft a new Declaration of New Patriotism showing our commitment to stopping global warming. We have a goal of collecting 75,000 signatures and will deliver the declaration to Congress by July 4th. Please join our campaign by signing the Declaration of New Patriotism today.

We're also collecting stories of people from around the country who embody the spirit of the New Patriotism. If you know a New Patriot, please share their story below.

The Second Draft of the Declaration

Global warming is the crisis of our time.

As we prepare to celebrate our nation’s birthday, we renew our commitment to the qualities and values that have guided our nation for more than 200 years.

Today, we recognize that patriotism is not only about love of country. It is also about a shared commitment to the welfare of our planet.

Future generations will judge us based on our success or failure to be good stewards of the Earth. We owe our children and our children’s children nothing less than our very best effort.

We the undersigned, pledge to:

  • Be mindful consumers, by minimizing our personal global warming “footprint;”
  • Be active citizens, by pressing our elected officials to take urgent action now, and by pressing all candidates for office to commit to passing strong legislation to cut America's global warming pollution;
  • Spread the word, by educating our friends, neighbors and loved ones and making sure they recognize that each of us has a role to play in meeting this all-important challenge.

This is the biggest change we face as a nation and a world since the industrial revolution. It is a green revolution and it will challenge all of us to rethink technology and its impact on our planet. We are finally waking up to the fact that we are not free agents. We all have a stake in the outcome of our collective efforts and the well being of every living thing on this planet depends on the actions we take now and in the future. The time for debate is over; we must only have dialogs that invoke serious change.

It is ironic that the key tenets of a beautiful culture that we crushed, could now be our salvation. Native American spiritual leaders are known to have advised consideration of the next seven generations in making any decision, any choice. If we truly consider the next seven generations in each of our actions, big and small, we will choose a sustainable course and save our planet.

Taking action to prevent the destruction of our beloved home -- Planet Earth -- must start with each individual and the choices each of us make daily. If each of us becomes committed to changing our wasteful habits, and act on that commitment, we will have an instantaneous revolution that will "trickle up" to our governments and big business. It is a waste of critical time to sit around thinking that we can't have an effect as individuals and must wait on our governments to take action or blame the business world for causing the problem. They will follow us where we go since we are their bread and butter. The actions of one individual combined with the actions of many other individuals will be revolutionary in its effect.

I firmly believe that with the selfish and quarrelsome tendencies of mankind that a land based climate solution is unlikely.
I have always believed that the only practical answer will come from the oceans. To date we have done nothing to the oceans apart from fish them out and use them as a dumping ground.
It is time we used the oceans as a resource and farmed them not just hunted on them.
There is a large body of evidence that suggests that if we were to only provide fractional nutrients (principally Iron) then vast areas of the Pacific would blossom with algae and phytoplankton, the first and essential links in the oceanic food chain. Not only would this encourage a regrowth of all types of fish species, it has the potential to capture truly vast quantities of Carbon Dioxide, enough to not only reverse the current alarming trend but take us back to 1980 levels or lower.
When will we begin to see sense and utilize this vast resource properly?
When we do, you can keep youe SUV and eat more affordable fish while saving the climate.

The quest for more and better STUFF cannot lead us anymore. Greed must become a thing of the past. We must realize that we are all connected. Globally. If the honey bees die (which they are doing in record number these days) none of our stuff will save or comfort us. I read that Albert Einstein said that if the honey bees die we have 4 years of life left on this planet. THAT is how important it is to stop and think about how humans affect the biosphere. before it's too late. WORLD CITIZENS.

When grocery shopping, please take the time to look at the label and see where the product comes from. Choose the products that are closest to your home. It takes a lot less fuel to deliver close by. Overall, it could help us reduce cost of the products we purchase by keeping fuel cost down and is a lot less strain on the environment.

I am still totally opposed to the whole idea of calling this declaration "NewPatriotism". And although I would like to support this effort and sign the declaration, I cannot do it with the current wording and emphasis on patriotism and "commitment to the qualities and values that have guided our nation for more than 200 years".

Why not take the more truly noble stand and reject patriotism as an outdated, unhealthy and unsustainable ideal?

By ignoring what patriotism really means (by dictionary definition) and what our country has really stood for throughout history you are not only glossing over the fact that this nation was founded on slavery and the genocide of its indigenous people but also glossing over our responsibility for the creation of this problem in the first place through our over-consumptive, consumer culture. I don't care how beautiful and idealistic the words of our founding fathers and all of our leaders throughout our history have sounded, their actions spoke much louder than their words. Until we face the hard facts about our history and our culture and take responsibility for the fact that we have been willing participants in this sytem and what our government is still doing to its indigenous people and around the world to perpetuate suffering and inequality, we will never be able to heal from our historical and cultural illness.

Short of a revolution from the grassroots up, (and it could be very violent) there will be no change in the attitudes, behaviors, bigotry and status-quo of American corporations/politicians.

Cancer is, well, cancer. Radical measures may not even eradicate the insidious plight corporations and elected/appointed officials have perpetrated against the American People.

However, incredibly, I do remain optimistic.

I believe that much more than communication with these perpetrators in the form of ballots and signatures are required to remove the obstacles preventing us from cleaning up our environment.

It's not that simple. As everyone knows, alternative forms of energy and automobile propulsion have been advised, offered and publicized for decades. Everyone has stories of alternative fuel and energy solutions. Our corrupt politicians and corporate CEO's who are colluding with each other, and have been for decades, will continue to create laws preventing us from real socio-economic reform.

We have to look at energy production and use more systemicaly. What are the impacts of energy production, storage, transfer, access and use? What are the impacts of every element that enables each of these items? We've gotten ourselves into trouble because we put money first. If we put the environment first, the money will still be there. We need to stop being petroleum centric and become Earth centric.

New "eco-safe", environmentally sustainable, technologies and commercial businesses should be developed, for the purpose of reducing emissions of polluting and environmentally hazardous substances affecting land, water, and air, as well as permanently dissolving, rather than merely burying, toxic substances at landfill sites. Factories, ships, airplanes, and other manmade machines should be equipped with filters to reduce the emissions of pollutants and other substances contributing to global warming, such as carbon. Experimental methods to dissolve and clean up existing toxic wastes at landfills, and other places, might include, using microbes, non-toxic chemicals, lasers, radiant heat, centrifuges, etc. Once eco-safe or eco-friendly technologies are developed, they can be exported around the world, creating jobs for Americans, and invigorating the American and global economies. Simply burying toxic wastes in landfills, or discharging polluting substances into the land, water, and air, will endanger public health, as well as increasingly reducing the extent of habitable living space for human beings, and other species, in an environmentally unsustainable manner.

For all of these reasons, I anticipate that a socially progressive, environmentally friendly, entrepreneurial movement to develop new environmentally sustainable technologies will be the most powerful force for positive change in the Twenty First Century. The development of such ecologically sustainable, or eco-safe, entrepreneurial technologies, supported with public and private funding, could amount to a "Third Industrial Revolution", having a comparable historical and social impact to the "First Industrial Revolution" of heavy industrial hardware inventions, and the "Second Industrial Revolution", involving the development of computer software technologies.

"Future generations will judge us based on our success or failure to be good stewards . . . "

This, to me, reads as declaration of self-importance. It reflects the worst aspect of individualism and is in keeping with the mentality that has gotten us to this point, in the first place.

Do we really care if we are "judged," and is this our motivation for preserving our environment? If we are doing this for the sake of our own fragile egos, then our efforts will surely not be successful.

Additionally, I fully agree with Betsy's comments about patriotism. It is, absolutely, an outdated -- and even corrupt -- notion. However, if this is a declaration to be submitted to our government, then this may not be negotiable.

I think very seriously, the reason for the problems in our world today are because of sin! We need to do a lot of praying and asking God to give us what we need to be doers instead of saying what is needed, do what is needed and what we can't control ask God to come in and take control! What do we have to lose! One has to believe in something, why not believe in God can fix it! It's foolish for man to say I did this when God actually give you what is needed to succeed!

The kind of leadership that can lift us to success in creating a sustainable civilization is one that has:
• The vision to embrace the future in a new, sustainable, renewable paradigm that departs from the destructive, wasteful, non-sustainable ways of the present
• The courage to embark on the journey to realize that vision
• The wisdom to stay true to the end vision, knowing that it will guide our steps, both collectively and individually
• The ability to communicate this vision so that people are inspired and motivated to take personal responsibility for bringing it to fruition

There is hope. I believe in people to change things. As we all become conscious about the ecosystem that surrounds us, we will take action to protect it. More and more people are engaged in outdoor activities that bring them closer to Mother Nature, which awakes in them a feeling of appreciation and gratitude. We should not get discouraged by comments that we hear or stubborn attitudes denying that there is problem. Keep a positive attitude and strongly believe that we will make it possible.

Anonymous said...

Sadly, until the citizens of this country (people, business and government) fully understand how much things have to change to have a real impact on climate change, little will help. It is the attitudes that really need to change.

We need to reduce our footprints now while we convert to other sources for energy. This will mean some sacrifice and many aren't really willing to commit.

Example: One major metropolitian city's city counsel proposed to require all buildings turn off their lights between the hours of 2:00AM until 6:00AM. The proposal was rejected, it would tarnish the skyline image. So the heavy footprints remain.

How sad, our image and lifestyle is more important than our existance.

Federal mandatory standards on re-use of glass, plastic and paper products. Explore the idea of CO2 scrubbers for the environment as well as factories. Tax the hell out of large, low economy vehicles, add 1.00 per gallon of gas and use that to fund battery technology and bio-desiel. Federal support for wind turbines that hooks up to your house and can sell power back to the grid as well as solar to do the same. Look to keep our car industry on top with federal guidelines instead of letting them do what ever they want leading to the poor shape the US auto industry is now. Create tax relief for home builders to create designs that are sustainable and off the grid. Create federal ad campaign to start changing minds and behavior about pollution and emissions. Give the EPA a police force to enforce the laws that are already in the books. Got many other ideas as well.

I have many grave concerns about using corn to make ethynol to put in our gas tanks. This is a very inefficient means of creating energy as this practice encourages growing huge monocrop fields that are dependent upon chemically intensive agricultural practices, and also make corn unaffordable to poor people who have been dependent on it for food. I suggest we use alien invasive plant species to make biofuel instead. Currently, alien invasive plant species are being sent to the landfills in areas where people are working to protect biodiversity by pulling up the aliens and bagging them. We also need to rely more on our own human power, ie, ride bicycles or walk..., rather than continue to be depentend on our fuel sucker autos.

Sadly, with trillions left to be made by big oil, change will not occur until the average citizen is slapped in the face with reality that those in charge care not for them, but for the almighty dollar. Money wins over integrity. Until the real consequences of human pollution become apparent to the now ignorant masses, we will not see real change.

The most vulnerable among us, the poor, children and animals, will be harmed first. By the time we make real change, the effects of our abuse will be well underway, more so than we have already seen.

Despite the bleak outlook, remember this. Mother Earth will spit us out and start anew. A world will be born that we cannot harm because our species will be wiped out.

1. I suggest not using the words patriot or patriotism in this statement. This is not a national issue. By definition, it is a global issue. It is not a point of personal or national pride or an invitation for self or national-aggrandizement. It is simply a commitment to solve a problem. Love of country has nothing to do with the intended outcome.

2. Why express the desire for future generations to judge us? This is a trite statement which in the end, is meaningless. Again, we are simply committing ourselves to an effort to solve a problem. Whether we are judged well or not in the future is of little significance. Whether we actually work to solve a problem is of great significance.

3. Since this is a global problem, why couch it as a statement from citizens in the United States. I would think the declaration should be one signed by people from all nations. If we do not do this as an international exercise, it will not solve the global problem. I suggest removing the statement about approaching our nation's birth - citizens of other countries could probably care less about our birthday. And, additionally, could view this as a very insular comment. It seems to me this declaration should be globabl in nature - not restricted to the USA.

4. In essence, I suggest that the preamble of this statement be rewritten and the wording of the first two statements be changed to state something like the following:

In recognition of the wealth of data supporting global warming and depletion of the ozone layer and strong evidence indicating that these effects will have long-term adverse consequences on our natural resources, species diversity, and survival, we the undersigned pledge to:

a. Be mindful consumers, by educating ourselves about global warming and the ways in which our personal behaviors contribute to the problem and then act to change those behaviors;

b. Be active citizens, by pressing our elected officials to take urgent action now, and by pressing all candidates for office to commit to passing strong legislation to cut global warming pollution;

c. Spread the word, by educating our friends, neighbors and loved ones and making sure they recognize that each of us has a role to play in meeting this all-important challenge.

The priority of our country is still meeting the ever-increasing energy demand and maintaining low energy cost - over achieving climate stabilization. We did not win WWII by prioritizing meeting the public's demand for silk for stockings or sugar, or fuel. . . .Yet the consequences of losing this war against cataclysmic climate change are far greater for all humankind than the incomprehensible horrors of losing WWII. It is time that the necessity of sacrifice be introduced to the American consciousness. We may actually have to face energy rationing. The hardship of such will be miniscule compared to the suffering we face if we do not succeed in achieving climate stability.

to a list with your particular vehicle, but you may have to wait a few months for it. By
requesting the PICC quote and giving us information on your vehicle, you enable us to
determine which makes and model we should address first, and as a result you become our
Preferred Customer. While you are waiting for your PICC quote we can offer you the ability
to get significantly increased gas mileage and saving money NOW through a more
conventional approach that requires no actual modifications to your engine!

Being a Preferred Customer opens the door for you to purchase a
technology called the Hydro-Assist Fuel Cell System that is ready
NOW! Here’s Our Proposal: If you buy the HAFC now, you
can use it until the PICC is ready, and then turn it back in for a
100% credit of it’s purchase price toward the purchase of the
PICC. As a
preferred customer, you will have had the added advantage of
using the HAFC for Free, save all the money on
gas for the time that you used it, get preferred ordering status for
the PICC, and have the 100% of the HAFC’s cost applied
toward the cost of the PICC.

WHAT IS THE HYDRO-ASSIST FUEL CELL AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

THE HYDRO-ASSIST FUEL CELL is a combination of
several technologies. One of these technologies is a unit that
extracts a Hydrogen-Oxygen mixture from distilled water. The
HAFC adds extra hydrogen to the fuel mixture which burns
easily and powerfully and enriches your fuel mixture, giving
you added mileage and power. The oxygen increases the octane
value of your fuel. We also use six powerful magnets that ionize
the water in the reservoir and the gasoline in the gas tank to
produce smaller molecules and separate their compounds into
simple elements so they burn more completely. And, a

specially formulated conditioner helps “crack” and vaporize your fuel as well as increase the life of your
engine. A perfectly balanced mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, combined with fuel vaporization and
ionization provide significantly increased mileage on the fuel you are currently using. The end result ….

Significantly Increased Gas Mileage because you get an energy filled burner (hydrogen)
and a higher octane fuel free

A Cleaner Engine because hydrogen does not create carbon when it burns so there’s no
carbon build up, and the oxygen/hydrogen mixture helps clean up existing deposits.

More Horsepower and Better Performance because a cleaner engine runs smoother and
more efficiently.

A Cleaner Environment because if you use less gas to get the same mileage, you are
decreasing the amount of pollution your vehicle creates. And, the oxygen-hydrogen mixture
burns clean. You’ll also be contributing to our independence from foreign sources of fuel.

The HAFC System will work in any conventional motor
vehicle. If your car or truck has an internal combustion
engine that burns gasoline, the HAFC System will work. It
doesn’t matter what make or model, or even what year. The
reason it will work in any vehicle with an internal
combustion engine is because it channels the hydrogen fuel
mix through the existing air intake system on the engine, via
the standard air intake hose or air cleaner. So, there are no
modifications to the current engine required. You just

“plug” the fuel cell (oxygen-hydrogen producing system) into the existing air intake system. The fuel
vaporizer connects to the existing fuel line to vaporize and ionize the fuel before mixing with oxygen
and hydrogen inside the engine.
Based on testing, we anticipate that most vehicles should expect to see a savings of 50%
100% in gas mileage, if installed correctly, and maintained properly. We have actually tested
higher savings on small 4 cylinder vehicles. In tests conducted on a Toyota Corolla and a
Hyundai Accent, the vehicles got 60 miles and 75 miles per gallon respectively.A 2007 Honda Civic
is getting 85 MPG! We expect that savings will vary from vehicle to vehicle, but you will have 30 days from date of
purchase to install it and be satisfied with your savings, or return it for your full money back.
You should also see increased performance via better horsepower and torque as the unit
cleans accumulated carbon deposits from your engine. You will need to add a quart of
conditioner every three fillups (should average 5-7 cents per gallon of fuel). You will also
need to keep distilled water in the reservoir for the hydrogen fuel cell to keep working.

We recommend that you get a licensed mechanic to install
this unit. It should take between 2-3 hours to install. With your
HAFC system, you will receive full installation instructions
including diagrams. Everything needed for installation is
included in the kit, with no additional parts to have to buy.
Installing the unit does not require any modifications to your
engine. You just connect it into the existing system.

The Vaporizer contains 6 powerful magnets to
help vaporize and ionize the fuel and break it
down into tiny sized molecules for easier
consumption, a cleaner burn, and a more full
utilization of the fuel.

Fittings For the
Fuel Cell
It can be used in freezing weather
The Fuel Cell is at the heart of the system. It
separates water into hydrogen and oxygen, and
adds the hydrogen to the fuel mixture, making
the fuel mixture rich so the computer “leans” the
fuel. The unit is built of durable stainless steel.

• measures 6 x 6 x 4-1/2
• draws 10-15 amps
• produces 50-70 liters of
hydrogen/oxygen
mixture per hour.

Why not take money we spend on oil and other fossil fuels, and rebate to American households to invest in things like geothermal heating/solar heating and for purchasing more fuel effecient automobiles (like the Prius). I would certainly buy more green energy if I could affort it.

Though the United States now consumes a huge proportion of the world's resources and creates the majority of the world's pollution, countries such as India, China, Brazil, Russia and others will eventually and collectively surpass our footprint and take us to the final tipping point. Therefore, solutions for combatting global warming must be undertaken by the entire global population to be effective. It is extremely important for the United States to immediately renew our committment to the higher purposes of our country's founding and begin leading the world through innovation and example to safeguard the Earth for the generations that will come after us.

When in the course of human events, conditions arise that force the undeniable realization that the leadership, devoid of any sense of sanity and lacking the responsibility of reasonable human beings to act in the best interests of world survival, has prostituted itself to the forces of greed, self-interest, and unabashed lust for political and religious preeminence; when the leadership promulgates distrust and suspicion among the peoples of the world in order to promote war and human misery in the unrestrained rape of the world's resources; when the leadership exempts itself from all responsibility for the ecological consequences of such actions; when the leadership is bent on destroying the birthright of every human being to breathe clean air, to drink clean water, and to eat food unpolluted by industrial waste and genetic contamination; it becomes the duty and obligation of every human being of this earth to declare that leadership to be null and void, and to replace that leadership with human beings with an ethical nature and conscientious awareness of the consequences of human activity on the survival of the one planet we know supports all our lives: this planet we call earth, our home.

I was struck by the word "America's" in the third pledge item. I think that our policies also affect other nations, giving them incentives to do things in the cheapest or easiest way, which may boost global warming pollution. How about eliminating that word so it reads "passing strong legislation to cut global warming pollution."

As an american, to connect with the natural world, and to look for ways to be sustainable with particular regard for fossil fuel emissions. A few strategies will help 1. no more coal power unless sequestered underground 2. mandatory tailpip emission limits, and complete control of co2 emmissions put in the hands of the epa without interference for economic gain by those with a vested interest in expansion of fossil fuel use 3. expansion of alternate fuel resources with money from a "carbon tax" of around 100$ a ton. 4. mandatory caps on greenhouse gas emissions, to be administered by the states for all services supplied by the state, and by the federal government by all services provided by the federal government.

The death of this planet through Global Warming means the death of EVERY LIVING THING. Perhaps instead of speading billions of dollars on a war over OIL the USA could spend it on saving the planet we ALL NEED to live on! THAT should be the ultimate "humanitarian effort"! We should all also consider that what Mars looks like is what the Earth will become if we don't stop Global Warming NOW - and, sadly enough, it may already be too late...an entire world does not become extinct - does not die - instantly...but one species, one plant...one tiny organism at a time...PLEASE stop Global Warming and find a cure for our planet - for the ultimate termanial "disease"!

Global Warming is HUGE. We are all creatures of habits. As a responsible adult who appreciates life, it is still challenging to make personal changes impacting global warming. Therefore out target audience should be our children. Just like "say no to drugs," we need to educate them, so they can remind us to make better choice in our everyday living.

As Lester R. Brown stated in Plan B, industry must take ecological responsibility for all aspects of their products, from production, waste, sales and disposal. One way to do this is with a carbon tax. The main focus of our government needs to be on concentrating on the various entities that have contributed to global warming and pollution of our Earth.

Each depends

Drawing life
from one Earth Mother
whose constnt cycles
herald the birth
Of all living things

Protect her kind
in all you do;
Love the earth,
the earth is you.

What I believe:

I believe that it should be mandatory to spay and neuter your pet (dog, cat and rabbit), except for any medical reason determinated by a vet.

I believe that there should be harsher laws and that people that practice cruelty to animals should be punished more severely.

I believe that hunting should be banned since it is cowardly, cruel and a pointless act. The hunter is not only taking the life of an innocent animal but its babies too, because they cannot survive without their mother’s care, just like humans!!

I believe that when you eat meat your are absorbing their fear and pain that they felt before and during their slaughter and the torture they endured throughout their miserable lives. Yes tortured - farm animals are constantly tortured and they are usually opened up while they are still alive.

I believe animals share the word with us since they were here before than humans. They are not selfish. We need to learn that the we don’t own the planet, but that we share it.

I believe that major companies and organizations should set an example by serving vegan/ vegetarian food and non-animal products at their events, i.e.: the Oscars, Golden Globes, Company Picnics , shows, etc. Also at weddings, parties, movie sets, schools and hospitals.

I believe that animal experiments should be banned at schools.

I believe that it should be mandatory to have a class at every school about the welfare of animals and the preservation of nature and how they can help to save their home, because after all the present will be their future.

I believe that experiments and/or tests with/on animals should be banned. It has been proved that it is not necessary to test on animals. For one reason, they react differently than humans and, secondly, there is technology designed to do the testing for the products with more accuracy than the ones done on animals. Besides, these animals suffer horrendous practices left for dead. Most times, the experimenters don’t even mercifully kill their subject; they just let them die.

I believe that animal products should be banned, once and for all, globally.

I believe that animals are to be free and they should never be used for entertainment, food, fashion or transportation.

I believe that Politicians should stop answering to all with death, war etc. and practice life and caring.

I believe that any person or company that cuts down a tree should replant a tree somewhere else that can accommodate and which could use more trees. Furthermore, when a tree or trees get cut down, I think there should be an official there who is an ally of animal welfare who can inspect and make sure that no animal is harmed in the process of cutting down the tree or trees.

I believe that we should learn from animals. Animals don’t hate, they are not racist, they are not selfish, they are respectful , they are protectors and are caring no matter what color, religion , sex preference or economic status you are.

Thanks and God Bless you,

The more people act locally, the more impact people will have globally.

The idea goes far beyond global warming issues. More fundamentally it is about how we live and act to sustain or destroy the ecosystem of which we are only a part. I would focus more on "sustainable living" as the core idea because global warming is simply one of the negative side-effects of how we choose live in this world. Consider:

If each person used a little less energy (compact fluorescents, thermostat restraint, turning off lights and computers, green/smart building, etc.) how much less coal and oil would need to be pulled from the earth and burned at power plants every year / how much less demand for new power plants would there be?

If each person shifted consumption patterns a little more to the "local" level (farmers' markets, local/non-chain businesses, eating-in, biking/walking to businesses, etc.) how much less gasoline would need to be burned to move goods and people every year?

If each person consumed fewer resources (reuse/don't buy new, recycle, buy recycled/renewable, reusable shopping bags, green/smart building, etc.) how much less damage would we inflict on our sustaining eco-system every year?

If each person learned a little more about "the issues" and voiced their positions a little more regularly with their local/ city/ state/ federal government representatives (and voted accordingly) how much more responsive would government be to the will of the people? (pollution/environmental standards, energy policy, food/health standards, housing/transportation policy, CAFE standards, etc.)

If each person gave a little more effort to only support ideas/ products/ businesses/ organizations in line with their social and environmental concerns how much more responsive would business become to consumers ? (materials sourcing and usage, social/environmental impacts, clean/sustainable energy, etc.)

If each person talked a little bit more to every other person about "the issues" how much more positive change could we effect every year?

This doesn't preclude the requirement for "big" actions and ideas, but all big actions always start small, and start because someone was persistent. And as the saying sort of goes, it's difficult to be a leader if you are standing at the back of the pack.

It is stated that Ozone Depletion begins when CFCs and other Ozone Depleting substances (ODS) are emitted into the atmosphere. When these materials are broken down by Ultra-Violet (UV) radiation; then these materials are hazardous to the Ionosphere. The most harmful component of this reaction is that one Chlorine atom can destroy over one hundred thousand (100,000) Ozone molecules in the upper atmosphere. This process can be eliminated by Ionosphere Recharging (IR) and providing a component that will REACT with the Chlorine(Cl) and Bromine(Br) atom(s) reducing the primary component of destruction to the Ozone Layer.

With the Ozone Layer becoming recharged less UVB Radiation will enter the Earth’s atmosphere. Less UVB means less reaction on the Earth’s surface of CFCs and ODS: this is new beginning.

The device is simply constructed and assembled via two balloons: one balloon with a (+) positive electrical charge, the other second balloon possessing a (-) negative electrical charge. The top balloon is filled with pure Helium (He). The second balloon is filled with a mixture of Helium (He) and Nitrogen (N2). A full wave rectified output from a filtered horizontal oscillator would provide approximately 60 KV of voltage producing a very strong Ionization affect. Part of this process would convert 02 to 03.

The power system for this device would be produced by several light-weight photo-voltaic solar panels. A small battery would maintain nighttime operations of this device at high altitudes i.e. stratospheric altitudes. With the massive generation of 03 molecules at high altitudes, this would re-generate the large amounts of destroyed ozone layer.

Chlorine (Cl) and Bromine (Br) atoms destroy massive amounts of Ozone or 03 molecules; therefore it is paramount AND imperative that these atoms be removed from the atmosphere via electro-chemical processing. The conductive media on the surface of these balloons can be simple copper wire, aluminum tape, and-or most importantly conductive strands of Sodium (Na).

The Balloon-Device Ionization Process (BDIP) can, at lower altitudes i.e. mountain tops with a device called Mountain Ionization Change Grids (MICGs). Instead of using balloons, a massive electrical grid of positively and negatively charged wires will produce the sought after Ozone Generation Process (OGP).

Sodium foil attached to our device will also attract Chlorine (Cl) atoms resulting in a chemical reaction producing Sodium Chloride otherwise know as NaCl or most commonly referred to as Salt, which is environmentally safe to oceans. The longevity of the sodium foil should be relatively long, considering the smallness of the Chlorine (Cl) atom. Sodium foil strips can routinely be replaced as required. Balloons can easily be retrieved via conventional weather balloon retrieval methods already in use, today. The most undesirable affect of UVB is the breakdown of CFCs resulting in Chlorine (Cl) atom disbursement into the atmosphere.

The most undesirable affects of UVB are skin cancers (melanoma), sunburns, and DNA mutations. The first noticeable affect of the “device” will be less UVB reaching the troposphere. UVB has negative effects on the Earth’s oceans resulting in over production of sea plankton, seaweed, and other bio-organic mass. The darker the sea surface, the most infra-red (IR) radiation is absorbed from the sun, resulting in incremental global warming. Warmer oceanic waters release Methane (CH4), Carbon-dioxide (C02), and Hydro-Sulfide (H2S) into the Troposphere adding to the overall Greenhouse Effect, combined with existing Carbon-dioxide (C02) emissions from modern industrial practices and addressed by Environmental concerns.

By dramatically decreasing the breakdown of CFCs, HCFCs, ODS, a dramatic improvement would be seen in a relatively short time. Other than just relying on our balloon “devices” and mountain based charge grids, existing air-transportation can be easily AND inexpensively retrofitted with our ionization devices on a “I want to help our World and make a difference” basis.

Another item of interest is that much of Europe is utilizing OZONE (O3) instead of Chlorine in their drinking water and swimming pools. The intrusion of Cl into the stratosphere is definitely causing damage to the ozone layer. The damage of chlorine on human’s immune system is taking its toll on a daily basis.

Chlorine was once used in wars and its toxicity made it illegal because of international laws. Chlorine should NOT be used by humans on a daily basis.

The large amounts of chlorine in drinking water are excessive and very un-healthy. Chlorine use should be minimized BEFORE efforts are made so to minimize the need to remove the material from the environment. Chlorine can destroy O3 and this is reason enough to do exactly this.

Given 15 year car-fleet turnover, half the new cars in the US by 2012 have to be gasoline independent to cut Middle East oil dependency over the next 20-30 years, which could be done by flex-fuel plug-in hybrids. Space solar power was rated the top space goal by 35% surveyed in the US. For nuclear energy to replace CO2 emitting power plants in the US, about 350 nuclear plants would have to be constructed – a new plant every two or three weeks for 15 years. US federal R&D spending for energy is less than half what it was a quarter-century ago in 1979. The U.S. and Canada should initiate work-at-home tax incentives; require new vehicles to be flex-fuel (gas-ethanol-methanol) by 2010; invest in carbon-tolerant alkaline fuel cells that can use methanol as well as hydrogen; and bring to market the many improvements to solar energy systems and biofuels. The US Department of Energy finds that "off-peak" electricity production and transmission capacity could fuel 84% of the country's 220 million vehicles if they were plug-in hybrid electrics. Currently the U.S. wastes 2.3 billion gallons of gas per year in traffic jams. The U.S. plans to build a demonstration “zero-emissions” coal-fired power plant and hydrogen production facility with integrated carbon capture and sequestration. The US has 105 biodiesel plants and 77 more in construction. Over 3000 megawatts from wind power is expected to be added to the US in 2007. Gasoline tax in the US is roughly one-seventh of the European level.

Pledge for Progress

Our legislative process is broken. Lobbyists have been writing legislation with the same pens with which they hand out campaign donations. Cronies have been installed in important federal posts. Dissent was being squelched by powerful committee chairs. Budgets were laden with pork barrel projects and out of balance.

The first order of business is to reform how we do the people’s business.

Rather than engage in personal attacks against those who have zealously broken the process, we offer instead a detailed agenda for fixing it. To this end, we offer this simple pledge, a covenant we make with the people of the United States. We pledge to give progress a chance. Congress has the power to clean up the corruption which threatens not only our democracy, but our planet's future.

FIRST, require that all members treat their offices with sober dignity and each other with professional courtesy and mutual respect;
SECOND, eliminate the ability of members to insert earmark appropriations into the Federal budget and require that all amendments be germane to the underlying legislation;
THIRD, require that all legislation or amendments proposed by any member be accompanied by a disclosure of financial interest by that member;
FOURTH, limit the terms of all committee chairs and legislative officers to six years;
FIFTH, reinstate respect for the rule of cloture to protect the people’s right to dissent;
SIXTH, establish an Ethics Committee composed of members of the House to investigate ethics complaints against members of the Senate and establish an Ethics committee composed of members of the Senate to investigate ethics complaints against members of the House;
SEVENTH, require the Ethics Committees to investigate all complaints referred to them within 180 days of referral;
EIGHTH, require members of congress to work a 40 hour work week on the public’s business in public meetings with no more than 4 weeks off a year;
NINTH, prohibit the use of the Capitol building or the House or Senate Office buildings for the collection of any campaign contributions and for meeting with those who have contributed to a member’s campaign; and
TENTH, to conduct a hearing open to the public to allow the People to tell us what ethical standards they believe should be enforced against their Senators, Representatives and their staffs.

If we are so brave here in this country, why do we have trillions to spend on FEAR and HATRED but we have no money for PEACE LOVE and UNDERSTANDING?

What is this Fear and Hatred? Where is it coming from? What is sustaining it?

Why do these leaders who act so tough need so many guns and bombs? What are they afraid of?

For some reason or lack of REASON they are not afraid of Global Warming. Could it be PROFIT related? There's more PROFIT in FEAR and HATRED perhaps?

Wildlife Park Biologists know that when you have too many of one species, they destroy their ecosystem. In our arrogance, we believe that humans are exempt from overpopulating our Global Wildlife Park.

In nature, no organism can hoard more than it can personally defend. Money has circumvented this natural control on hoarding resources, allowing a tiny few to continually hoard and impoverish the rest. Their corporations are very efficient in this regard. The endless search for cheap labor and reduced environmental standards are directly responsible for immigration and population growth in the countries they exploit as people bear more working children to bring in less and less cash.

Global Warming comes from growing populations using depleting resources, accompanied by environmental pollution and species extinction. Exporting arms instead of birth control devices is a stupid and cruel way to control overpopulation.

I was thinking the other day about the whole web of life - How everything is interconnected. I thought about the corruption in our world and what it is based on. It all comes down to MONEY. MONEY... it doesn't even exist as a part of the web of life... it is just something that we made up, that we invented. How sad is that? All this corruption over something that doesn't even matter in the grand scheme of things.

I believe in stopping useless transportation of goods. That's why I buy organic produce grown locally or at least regionally. The average piece of commercially grown produce travels something like 2,000 miles to the pruduce counter in a supermarket. If we would buy goods produced locally, or at least regionally, we would GREATLY reduce the amount of fuel being used. Just think about it.

Global Warming is Nature's "Heads Up" to alert mankind
to its irresponsible misuse of Earth. Spreading like a
cancer to the detriment of all other creatures and plants,
we will breed ourselves right off the planet. Ending up
with nothing to eat but each other. A true parasite,
killing its host. Can we still reverse the process?

Mankind does not own the resources and life on this planet, but is merely their steward. Stewardship imposes a responsibility for nurture and care; to leave our planet's ecosystems in a state as good as, or better than, when they were passed on to us. Those who are still connected to the natural world recognize they have no choice but to assume stewardship.

Human population is the elephant in the room. It is the the obvious - and very little talked about - source of massive environmental impacts and ceaseless encroachment upon the natural world.

We have to deal with this issue or it will deal with us, most unpleasantly. Rational thought and foresight must assert themselves in this regard. We need a national, regional, and global plan to deal with human population expansion. This is not an issue of race, it is an issue of human numbers, and consumption, and ecological impacts.

Every environmental action we take will be undone by ceaseless human population growth and the massive impact it entails.

Most of these comments are us talking to ourselves. We all agree about our basic values.. I think that whatever language ED comes up with for its resolution, the highest priority is to come up with new ways of getting our messages and actions out to people who are not yet on board with our agenda. Broadening the base. This is starting to happen largely as a result of the buckets of money the environmental community is pouring into global warming awareness, but there is a lot more work be done to activate the inactive. Just getting more Americans to vote and to vote for pro-environment candidates would do a lot.

I am working on a new project called mediacow.tv that is trying to distribute short-format, entertaining digital media on a number of progressive issues to the wired mobile youth crowd ages18 to 30 - people who communicate a lot through text-messaging and social networking sites. We envision a large environmental channel and are looking for groups who are interested partnering with us to get their messages out using new digital media. We are building a toolkit to help traditional groups that don’t have the tools and networks to get their messages out to a wider, younger, wired, less politically and environmentally aware audience.

Our interim website is at http://www.mediacow.tv/, but we are in the process of building a much cooler one with a new movie player with more buttons and gadgets for distributing messages virally, which should be up and running soon. The main thing about our content though is that it does not live so much on a website as on peoples’ cell phones and mySpace pages.

Any group interested in partnering with mediacow.tv to reach more people using digital media can contact me.

We ARE the planet! We are living matter and spirit just like all other living things are part of the whole. The planet is out of balance because we are out of balance. We have created many fires over this whole planet we call mother earth. Every car is a fire. Every electrical generation plant is a fire. Every factory is a fire. Too many fires and not enough oxygen generating and carbon dioxide eating organisms in this world because we have cut a lot of them down, destroyed them and are not replacing them. People as a group have to wake up to what we are as a group, doing to destroy this planet's balance and care enough to undo what we have done. If we don't then we are sealing our own fate by our bad habits. We need to change our habits. That's it.

Yes, global warming is an big issue, but we should not let Gore dictacte (no offense sir) how we should be.He has 4 mansions which use up enough electricity to light up several stadiums(Source O'Reily Factor). We have actors also telling us how we should live our leves. They want us to walk while they drive and fly (Leonardo DiCaprio). It is simple: stop cutting down trees and burning them, light only the room you are in, make sure your car is well maintained (get tuneups when possible), carpool or take a bus when applicable, use less paper or use recycled paper, rally against power plants who refuse to use a non carcinogen product in thier plants, and do the same concerning 18 wheeler companies, water your lawn in the early morning or in the evening, bring over the solar powered cars from Japan, take cloth bags to stores when buying products-some stores will give you a discount. Stop haviing big families, food supplies and water supplies will dwindle, overcrowding in hospitals and schools will happen as well. Not top mention SSI, Social Security, Employment, Food Stamps will be less (O'Reily Factor). This is going to happen with as more people enter the US. More people create more waste. Just look at our landfields. Above all, treat others the way you want to be treated. We all need to do our part.

I think a big part of this is educating ourselves and then educating others to understand the steps we can take - no matter how big or small to stop global warming. Simple things like using cloth napkins, bringing reusable utensils to work, not pressing the electric door when you can open it yourself; every action can help if we all pitch in. EDUCATE.

Global warming is a huge issue that will affect all of us. Most of all I think of the species extinctions that are happening at an accelerating rate. We've all heard about the problems polar bears and various other sea animals in the arctic and anarctic are having with the melting ice. Corral reef and mountain environments are also suffering. The two primary solutions are 1) more efficient energy production, but more importantly, 2) energy conservation by changes in human lifestyles. Population control is also very important, as I don't think the planet can sustain the level of population we have much less the population that is projected in the not-very-distant future.

Anonymous said...

We have only one planet to sustain us. We must recognize that our every action has an impact on our planet and the people around us. It is not until we disturb peoples "creature comforts", like blackouts due to the excessive waste of electricity, will they even get the idea that we must not take these things for granted. We must find alternative energy solutions so as to have a positive impact on striving for clean water, clean air, clean environment. When we have totally polluted the environment, where will we go to get these every day life sustaining gifts? No amount of money can ever buy back these precious gifts from Mother Nature. Don't expect goverment agencies that are suppose to take of the environment to protect us, because they haven't up to now...wake up and smell the pollution!

I think we need a major revolution in thought. Let us get back to the idea of local and regional economies. Stop buying your food at your local corporate food distribution centers for instance. Why do we need to buy Stonyfield Farms yogurt that has been shipped across the country when we can employ a local diary farmer to raise his cows sustainably on grass and create our own regional market? If we calucate profit/loss of our business economy based on the current model it might look dangerous to change but why not change the model? Peak Oil is a reality, why not voluntarily impliment change now instead of waiting until we don't have a choice and we have destroyed life as we know it on this green planet? We don't need to buy everything we consume from a corporation. Buy local, buy less and lean into what is right. There was a time not so long ago when we did support local companies, industries and farmers. Create your own local support system and stop the power of the corporations by starving them. We need to educate our communities about the footprint of our "convenient" lifestyles. For instance we should only use plastics for important, life saving purposes like medical equipment not yogurt cups, food containers, toys, etc. ad nauseum. If we buy local our food doesn't need to be filled with chemicals so it can last the trip or life on the shelf, it would be fresh and natural. Be conscious of your choices, intention is the key!

Grassroots movements locally can have a profound effect on the global world. You and I are individually responsible - WE must be the change we wish to see in the world. Drive less/carpool, recycle, reuse - do everything you can do, every little bit does matter. Corporations and world leaders must be held accountable.

The 3rd draft is better but the language should be changed from just "America" to United States of America (because when Americans call themselves American it can be irksome to Central and South American people who are also Americans, technically) but I would really prefer if we could make this a global document. Is that possible? Can we word it right to include any person from any country? This is a global problem. I read the comment in which "mama" said we should eliminate the word "footprint" but instead why don't we just qualify the word. You know, put a phrase or sentence to make clear what "footprint" means just in case it becomes "aged" or dated or whatever.

Simply stop dancing all around the issue. Raise the cost of gasoline by taxing the heck out of it until EVERYONE in this country feels the pain and works to do something about it. Increase the MPG on auto manufacturers, NOW, not 20 years down the road. Fine companies for dumping garbage into the air and water. Repeal all the laws done away with my the Bush administration regarding our environment. Join the rest of the world in a HONEST effort to bring about change. Now, not when it's too late. Offer rewards to the first two manufacturers who come out with a normal plug-in to charge, reasonably priced automobile, and employ our legal citizens to build them in this country. Where is the leadership and the spine from anyone in our country?

Global warming is the crisis of our time.

Action on this front is key.

While keeping this in mind, we need to also clear the way to success by working on two fronts that will restore citizen influence over legislation.

1. Public funding of campaigns, AKA Clean Money
2.Election protection: paper ballots as the official record and access to the software that counts the votes(Open Source)

So long as legislators need corporate funds and so long as elections can be easily stolen, work on global warming will be in the s-l-o-w lane.

The earth is our mother, and as such we should love and honor her, live in gratitude and appreciation for what she is, not for what we can distort her into.

The earth is a precious jewel, a gift, a beautiful miracle of life, something not to be taken for granted.

The earth is a living entity, and as such it can be injured, maimed, diseased and killed. Violence solves nothing. Compassion heals.

All we need to do is to live unselfishly, to act with wisdom and respect. It doesn't take much to live a greener life.

The most advanced and honorable thing that humanity can do, as a species, is to live in balance with the earth and all the other beings that live here with us.

Grobal warming is a destructive thermal event that is advancing at a relentless pace. Methods to reduce its ill-effects must be found. This cannot be achieved if our understanding of its cause is in error. Global warming is relentlessly increasing in intensity as the population of mankind increases and its energy demands continue to burgeon. The entry of China, India and other developing nations into the energy demanding world of industry and commerce will ensure this will proceed at an alarming pace. Therefore, it is imperative that our diagnosis of its cause is correct so that the appropriate cure can be applied.

I believe that the first step to global conservation is to start wih the transformation of technologies. The United States and several other devoloped countries built their high economies through the presence of industrialization. These industries were created with the use of technologies that created a high level of emissions and pollutants, many of which were later found to be the main cuase of global warming. If we can get the non-developed or the developing worlds to latch on to the more environmentally freindly technologies as part of their development rather than using these high emissions systems, they will be biulding thier own economies on the premises of environmentalism. This could have lasting effects on the environment in a positive way, as well as individual cultures and perspectives towards the environment. On top of that, if policies could be reformed in the United States and other developed countries to slowly reform industry in a way that they can easily regenerate themselves into using these environmentally friendly technologies themselves, then we will have a complete reformation of the environment and possibly the ability to heal from the trenches of global warming. The glaciers may never be able to go back to their original state, and it may take a lifetime to get the polar bear populations back to where they originally were, but it has to be started somewhere. Countries that have biult their economies through degredation of resources should be the number one targets of neoclassicalism and technologies transfers. Their environments will take the longest to repair becuase they are the closest to complete desertification of all regions. Reformation of these societies may take more that just technologies and business, it may take health reform and reformations of political structures, and political outlooks in regards to how businesses both from within their regions and those established from other regions may treat the surrounding environment, and educational reforms, among other things, but it can happen. TRanformation may take a lifetime, but once it is in place, it may become almost impossible to go back to how it is now.

Anyway, thats my opinion.

In light of the current warnings about global warming, it is apparent that the United States is engaged in looking at revival of building nuclear power facilities to augment or repalce hydroelectric plants. The idea, it appears, is to copy the present nuclear behemoths such as the Palo Verde Plant, the Three Mile Island Plant and the San Onofre Plant. I am reminded of Edward DeBono's "New Think" philosophy, to think laterally in searching for problem solutions. Bigger is not necessarily better and consequences of patterning Nuclear Energy construction on the dinosaurs of the past is not relevant to the future. Failure of the current type nuclear stations, such as the spill at Three Mile Island, not only cripple a large segment of the regional population, but are extremely dangerous to our planet. Small, safer, cheaper and more controllable stations already have prototyle models available. These can be repaired or replaced in a matter of days, or at most, weeks. The Army's PM-1 station I am most familiar with is the one on Warren Peak in Sundance, Wyoming. Now sitting behind locked gates, it has never been dismantled. The reactor poses no hazard, but the excessive asbestos packing around the core would have to be removed and replaced with safer materials. This particular staion, I understand, did not use Uranium for fuel, instead transformed Thorium into 2-33 and used iodine instead of water as the radioactive conduit. In the rare possibility of a spill, iodine would evaporate into the stratosphere in a matter of 7 seconds and its molecular structure would rapidly disperse. A review of this facility can be read online at the Energy Citation Database site, product.biblio.jsp?osti_id4167059. Material is also found in an article "Nuclear Power; An Option for the Army's Future at www.almc.army.mil/alog/issues/SepOct01/M5684. An excerpt from Rod Adams article at www.atomicinsights.com/nov95 discusses the numerous Army PM-1 plants and their capacity. His web site at www.atomicengines.com shows the potential of enormous proportion, a network of such small, safe, cheap nuclear facilities, beneficial to the planet in producing and selling energy to localized Utilities.
I suggest checking out such possibilities on Rod Adams web sites among others. How do I know about the Sundance, Wyoming Nuclear Power plant? My brother was one of the designers.

1) Global Warming may not only deplete resources from our future generations (or change the earth); however, it could lead to the extinction of our species if we are not responsible stewards.

2) In the vein of leaving a smaller footprint of the items that we utilize: it should be a federal mandate to incorporate sustainability on a national level. That will inspire other nations to follow in our footsteps.

The sincerest form of appreciation is for all of us to learn from Nature and to preserve and protect those precious gifts that sustain all life. It is with great appreciation for all life, what it has provided us, what we have learned from it, that we want to do everything possible to preserve and protect our Environment. This is how to express appreciation and say "thank you".

Recycle everything you can and encourage others to do so. Buy organic, every time you do, you save pesticides from contaminating our planet. Change all your light bulbs to energy efficient fluorescent. No one can do everything but everyone who does a little will help.

Our planet is a gift and we are called to be responsible stewards. It should be said "If you love the Creator, take care of His creation." An acknowledgement of the spiritual origins of earth needs to be emphasized in the declaration, since we are a "nation under God".

Though heavy sarcifice can make a stone of the heart, each of us will willingly contribute some of our energy and part of our daily needs to see that the species survives. If we know what is needed, we can do it swiftly and it will be enough. We can rise up and defeat the corporate greed mongers and the Republican fear makers. However, it must be done without any more delay. Impeach Bush and Chaney and let's get on with it.

Hold politicians feet to the FIRE! They've learned to twist words and logic; they're masters at "wordsmithing" and talking absolute gibberish. Voters need to quit being distracted by issues that do not affect them directly. Senator Inhofe stated that "global warming is a hoax". Then the floods, tornadoes, droughts, fires, hurricanes outside voters winders should just be ignored as they are some "tree huggers" imagination.

I live in a rural area just outside of city limits and I can attest to the environmental catastrophe due to the use of herbicides and pesticides.

I can show you acres and acres of denuded dead trees due to the use of herbicides. The farmers begin the season by spraying herbicides(they use roundup ready cotton and other crops immune to herbicides). Then they follow up with pesticides which sticks to honeybees and they end up taking back to the hive. Then they finish the season by spraying the field with defoliant(similar to agent orange). The cotton absorbs the defoliant and is again dispersed into the environment in the form of gin dust.

I tried to sue the local crop duster for killing my trees and my lawyer said that I would ultimately have to sue the chemical company. My lawyer said that they have millions of dollars set aside for lawsuits and have a slew of lawyers on hand to fight in court. I hung my head and walked out.

I plant at least one tree each year to help the environment. Then they come around and kill 10 trees to my one.

Legislation needs to happen to conduct studies of the effects these herbicides and pesticides have on the environment and on people. If these chemicals can destroy plant cells, then just imagine what it can do to sensitive lung tissue.

It is my oppinion that herbicides and pesticides cause more environmental damage than anything else. I have learned through trial and error that the Cotton wood tree, the China berry tree, The pine, The Pecan and the Bradford pear trees are somewhat resistant to these herbicides.

Make geo-thermal the centerpiece of future energy sources; it can serve the wholew planet cleanly.

I am certain these comments have been expressed among the 324 (which I don't have the patience to read) but here they are, anyway:
1) Personal commitment is emphasized; however, corporations, industries and power companies must be willing and dedicated participants.
2) A well-thought-out list of things that must be done, perhaps with some quantification of the benefits, would be useful.
3) Environmental/ecological preservation is an important key to reducing global warming - this fact doesn't seem to be emphasized enough. An individual can make some important contributions, but education, laws, and a sea-change in how the environment is regarded are ultimately required.

People are creatures of habit, of course...But as a problem becomes larger and larger, I'm sure we can all break our harmful habits to help. Yet to combat ignorance, personal gain, and unwillingness that prevents action to help the environment, there's no saying exactly what will happen--From me. However, I am beyond a doubt that those who intend to help the environment, help others, or just be a hero and save the world can, at their own will, band together and succeed at whatever life-loving goal presents itself. I don't think it makes sense for the earth to be destroyed yet, so let's rebalance it.

I believe that we create our reality with our thoughts and beliefs, and that where one puts one's attention is what one brings into existence. If we live in fear, we will get what we fear. If we believe that we can heal the earth, and we work toward that goal steadily, we can heal the earth. I think it was Goethe who said, "If there is anything you think you can do or dream you can do, Begin it! Begin it now! For the moment one takes that initial step Providence steps in, and all manner of things occur which never otherwise would have."

We pledge not to use more natural resources just because we can afford them, recognizing that each human footprint on this Earth should attemp to have a minimal detrimental impact and should strive to improve in all ways the sustainability of the web of life throughout the global community.

By any reasonable measure, we have already exceeded the carrying capacity of the Earth to support human life. All the central environmental problems are created by overpopulation and overconsumption of resources. Let us take the lead in reducing both population and consumption. Let us commit to less, not more.

Isn't anyone else worry about our

because it right! For your children
sake! For everbody who's effected by this. You know what I mean! The
weather is out control, animals have nowhere to escape and Our air just isn't the same.

we should put a tax on carbon emissions, while reducing other taxes, this way taxes for those who do not pollute ececivly will remain low, but takes for people who pollute a lot will go up. A tax would make people make changes

It is probably a good idea to put someone in office who understands and appreciates the seriousness of global warming - that it is actually happening. However, most of this rests with us -'we' have to start making different choices; stop buying meat from farm factories which are not only brutal but some of our most serious polluters; trade in the suv's, the hummers, the oversize trucks, don't use paper or plastice-buy reusable shopping bags. At least then we can tell our children(whom we should get involved)and grandchildren - we did our part. In the end 'we' are responsible for what happens to our home -the late great planet earth.

First, some editing: "We, the undersigned, recognize that we live in a time of crisis, etc. Then, "We pledge" [therefore we pledge is the idea].

Then: we pledge: not to accept politically crafted compromises. We may have to take one step at a time, but we cannot afford half-measures. Politicians will do what they think they have to do to remain electable, i.e., to please their funders as well as their constituents. Our task is to see to it that they do the right thing, no matter what their funders think and no matter what their advisers think their constituents will think. We pledge to hound them, harass them, stalk them until they do the right thing, and then, yes, reward them with our votes and our dollars.
